The Story Behind this Substack

Most of my public presence is dedicated to my music (you can listen on Spotify or watch on YouTube), even though my writing of poetry pre-dates my writing and performing music. However, I have maintained a poetry mailing list — migrated from platform to platform — since the late 1990s, and I’m gratified to note that some subscribers have been with me since the very beginning.

When I read about the combination blog/mailing list service Substack, I was inspired to create a dedicated space for my words. The platform is simple, elegant, and through the commenting/liking/sharing features, allows for more engagement than a traditional email list.

I send poems to the list every Tuesday and Friday. I hope you’ll consider joining me as a paid subscriber (it’s only $7/month). But even as a free subscriber (same sign-up form), you’ll still get the occasional free poem (roughly 2-4 times per month), delivered right to your inbox.

Why subscribe?

And to close… a poem.

tiptoes
across the table
tiny prints
white powder scattered
across brown wood
dark as chocolate,
sweet as honey
but not sticky –
one whoosh
of the fan
and gravity
claims the crumbs.
